Deciding to start any new fitness activity, or joining a new class of any type can be pretty scary and you may have a few questions, so hopefully below will give you all the information you need to help take the next step.
Blocks to starting classes
I'm 'too' old/big/small/unfit/tired
I can't do that. It's for guys/girls!
I have a physical or mental disability that impacts my ability to do the class
I struggle to motivate myself
The classes don't suit me time wise
I've had bad experiences elsewhere. How is this place any different?
These are all normal blocks and commonly experience by many people so you are not alone! They are all things addressed via teaching methods, student & instructor behavior and the adaptations made to facilitate students. If any of these are affecting you, please message! You won't be the only one who has felt this way and you won't be the last.
I have a disability or challenge. Are your classes suitable for me?
Please never let any physical or mental health challenges you may face hold you back or stop you at Evolution Wellness. Personal experience, as well as training, mean that your needs are truly understood! Please get in contact and we will talk through it together.
(Examples of conditions worked with previously: Depression, anxiety, Severe OCD, PTSD, Multiple Sclerosis, M.E, Cystic Fibrosis, CFS, Fibromyalgia, Severe dermatitis issues, hypermobility, self-harm, hyper/hypo thyroidism, hypertension, asthma, Social anxiety, tinnitus etc etc)
Do I need to have any experience?
Absolutely not! We all have to start somewhere! (Clique but true). Not matter what your experience level, everyone is welcome and you will be certain to take something new home every week, be it your first class or 100th!
What will be expected of me?
Be kind to yourself. You are learning something, so be as patient and mentally kind to yourself as you would another person. It makes a difference to your performance!
"Be kind to others, be supportive where possible, don't participate/engage in gossip and leave judgement & shoes outside." These foundations are what makes Evolution Wellness so special.. Like the ice caps, we want to protect this wonderful environment for everyone to enjoy.
Keep the studios and environments being used as tidy as possible.
Be honest with your instructors about any health conditions. They can be difficult to talk about, embarrassing perhaps and sometimes things we don't want to share but telling us is a requirement to keep you safe. Whatever you tell us is kept confidential and treated with complete respect and compassion.
Be safe. This doesn't just mean being sensible on equipment but extends to listening to your body and mind. If today feels like a day you need to hold back to preserve your energy levels for example, then do that. It's perfectly okay and encouraged.
Do I need to bring anything with me?
All classes: water (please try and bring a reusable bottle with you), medication you might need (like inhalers for example), towel or flannel. Optional extras you might like to bring are your own mat but they are provided.
Everything else is covered!
How long will it take before I start to see any changes/benefits?
As with learning and doing any skill, the more you do it, the better and quicker you'll see results and improvement. Factors such as your physical starting point, fitness background, mental strength & determination will all play a part but no matter where you start from, you will progress! Most people notice the first changes themselves after about 4-8 weeks of weekly classes. However, to us instructors who have a well trained eye, we can see those changes and progressions long before you can so you can always ask us for feedback! It's lovely being able to tell you how your hard work is paying off!
How big are the classes?
Classes are intentionally kept small. Currently maximum number are 4 a class. This is for everyone's safety, equipment of your own without sharing and enough instructor attention.
I don't feel comfortable doing this with others, can I do it in a 121?
Yes of course. Private session are available on all services so please do get in contact to discuss your needs.
What can I expect a class to contain?
Every month, Evolution Wellness works with a theme and this runs through all classes, even the fitness ones, which makes for some really great, extra content, often providing food for thought students may not have experienced previously.
Every class will contain a warm up and cool down designed to suit class content and student level. This is essential for injury prevention and muscle maintenance. Every week is different so it doesn't get boring.
Pole & hoop classes: these classes will also contain conditioning (Strengthening exercises designed to build on technique and physical strength to be able to progress faster through moves safely), a recap of prior moves to give students the oppertunity to improve them, keep them in mind and so they remember how amazing they are being able to do them! New moves are often added, combination and routines. These offer endurance, cardiovascular and stiminar building elements to the workout.
All classes cater to auditory, visual and kinesthetic learning styles, as well as offer information on how you may wish to adapt, progress or regress movements for your own practice and sports psychology/mindfulness incorporated skills (Although these are seamlessly integrated and you may not be consciously aware you are getting these added perks. If you check the testimonies from other students though, you will see it clearly makes a difference!)
Is there any class etiquette I need to be aware of?
There are a few things we ask of you just to help everyone's experience be the best it can be.
Please arrive a little earlier to your class so we can start on time
Tell your instructor of ANYTHING you feel may impact your class. Be that physical, mental or emotional. This means you can be as supported as possible during your class (and yes, mental and emotional factors are just as important!)
You've arrived, your keen and enthusiastic- that equipment is just calling to be used but please wait for the class to start before jumping on poles, hoops etc. You'll be let on it as soon as deemed safe. Promise!
Please clean your equipment after you use it
Put equipment back safely and securely
Listen when your instructor is talking. You may know the information they are giving out but you may pick up a new tip or be able to challenge your own learning further. It also means the instructor can focus on delivering this information without distraction.
Support and cheer on your class mates. Your energy and support absolutely matters and creates an impact. It's always appreciated!
I have another question and although there is lots of information on your website, I can't seem to find the answer to my question. Can I contact you for assistance?
Absolutely! Just get in contact via one of the methods on the contact page.
